Journey back to ancient Mars with a pioneer in Martian research. Uncover the secrets of a time when Mars boasted Earth-like hydrology, complete with flowing rivers and vast seas, most notably the “Oceanus Borealis,” which covered much of the northern part of the planet. This course draws on a groundbreaking 50-year odyssey of discovery, offering personal insights into the quest that reshaped our understanding of Mars. Engage with the latest findings, understand current scientific debates, and explore the future of Mars exploration. Class discussions will examine the profound implications of current and future Mars science for understanding the possibility of life beyond Earth, for the eventual human exploration of Mars, and for a better understanding of the evolution of our own planet. Join us to unravel the mysteries of a water-rich Martian past and its profound impact on space science and our place in the cosmos.

Victor Baker

Regents Professor

Victor R. Baker is Regents Professor of Planetary Sciences, Geosciences, and Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. An American Geophysical Union Fellow and former President of The Geological Society of America, his publications include 20 books and more than 450 research articles and chapters dealing with the geology and paleo-hydrology of Mars, flood and mega-flood paleo-hydrology, geomorphology, and the history and philosophy of the Earth and planetary sciences. He has appeared in numerous television documentaries dealing with Mars and mega-flooding.
