One of the most influential photographers of his generation, Ansel Adams is famous for his dramatic photographs of the American West. This course focuses on his early career and largely unknown early work. It will demonstrate how these early photographs are crucial to understanding his artistic development and offer new insights into many aspects of the artist’s mature body of work. Beginning with an album from his childhood and ending with his Guggenheim-supported National Parks photography of the 1940s, the course highlights the artist’s persistence in forging a career path and his remarkable ability to learn from experience as he sharpened his image-making skills, including the significance of the artist’s environmentalism and involvement with the Sierra Club. We will find newly revealed aspects of Adams’s career and explore his role in cofounding the Center for Creative Photography.
