The short story is a meticulously structured literary form that requires discipline in its plot and structure. In science fiction, this format pushes boundaries by integrating groundbreaking scientific and technological advancements crucial to the narrative. This summer seminar invites you to explore a curated selection of short stories by diverse authors, fostering in-depth discussions that illuminate the complex interplay between plot progression, character depth, evocative imagery, and imaginative creativity, all contributing to an exhilarating literary journey. Are we moving toward a brighter future? Can technology truly simplify our lives? How bold can writers be in depicting new realms of virtual reality? What is the potential for artificial intelligence to coexist with humanity? Through these questions, we will analyze how science influences each story’s plot, the role of technology in driving action, and the depiction of gender dynamics. Each session will blend lectures with dynamic discussions, ensuring a rich and engaging experience as we cultivate a deeper appreciation for the short story as an artistic medium.

Required Reading

No textbook is required. All readings will be distributed to students electronically.
