In this course, we will explore the concept of memes and how they resonate so powerfully with their audiences both today and throughout human history. We will define the term “meme,” examine the many forms that memes can take, and learn to interpret and understand the cultural messages embedded within memes. From the iconic “Success Kid” to the “Everything is Fine” the course will explore the evolution, impact, and cultural significance of memes. Students will come to understand the processes behind meme propagation, analyze current digital meme uses, and explore how memes shape and are shaped by the zeitgeist. In the end, we will consider both the ways that we can use memes to persuade others and the ways that others can use memes to influence us. With a blend of theory and real-world examples, we will seek to both understand memes and critically evaluate their persuasive power in human societies across time and around the world.

Meet Your Professor
Sumayya KR Granger
Dr. Sumayya Granger holds a B.A. in French and Art History and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics, all from the University of Arizona. She is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Public and Applied Humanities (PAH) at UA. She has taught classes on memes, collaboration, intercultural competence, the relationship between humans and animals, and effective habits of mind. In addition to her role in PAH, Dr. Granger serves as the Associate Director at the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL).
