Dive into the rhythmic heart of America with a journey through the history and evolution of tap dance, a quintessentially American art form born in the 1800s. This course offers a unique examination of culture, history, and artistry, tracing tap’s roots from its multifaceted origins in African, English, Irish, and Scottish dance styles to its prominence in Jazz and mainstream music culture. Engage with the stories and styles of legendary tappers like Master Juba, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, The Nicholas Brothers, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, Ann Miller, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Chloe Arnold, and many, many others through captivating examples and video footage. We will spotlight different icons and their groundbreaking contributions each week, enriching your understanding with assigned readings. Whether you are a dance enthusiast or a curious learner, join us to celebrate tap dance’s innovative spirit and vibrant legacy.

Assistant Professor

CHRISTIE KERR is an Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre in the School of Theatre, Film, and Television. She has worked as a choreographer, teacher, performer, and director throughout the United States. A graduate of The University of Michigan, Christie holds a BFA Degree in Musical Theater Performance and is a proud member of SDC (Stage Directors and Choreographers Society).
