LYNNE SCHEPARTZ is a biological anthropologist whose research over four decades has focused on the evolution of human language and symbolic thought. She contributed to the excavation of a Neandertal burial and described the first known Neandertal hyoid bone and associated speech structures. Her co-directed fieldwork at Panxian Dadong, China, uncovered important evidence of strategic planning in early toolmaking and animal use.
