Dr. Malcolm Compitello, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and Head of the UA Department of Spanish and Portuguese for the past 16 years, is the Program Director of the Humanities Seminars. After completing his education at St. John’s University (B.A. and M.A.) and Indiana University (where he received his Ph.D in Hispanic Literature) , he taught for eighteen years at Michigan State University before coming to the University of Arizona. He has taught several highly successful HSP seminars, which have ranged widely over Spanish cinema, art, literature, and politics. He has also served on the HSP Board of Directors for six years. Besides his administrative service, Malcolm has maintained an active research program. He is the author or editor of four books and author of over 30 scholarly articles. He is also the Executive Editor of the Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies. Malcolm brings to the Program not only his skills and experience as Department Head but also his scholarship and his commitment to the advancement of humanistic endeavor in the broadest sense.
